The feed water heater heats the water from the tender before
it enter the boiler. This reduces the amount of work the boiler
must do, saving fuel. The type of unit pictured is the Elesco
bundle-type. Exhaust steam is piped in where it heats the cold
water from the tender, the hot water is pumped into the boiler by
a steam driven pump. The unit on the model does work.
