The smoke box housed the stack, super heater, blower, and on some engines the throttle. The super heater consisted of several steam pipes run through tubes back to the firebox to heat the steam to a higher temperature, this increased the amount of power the steam had. The blower is a steam nozzle directed up the stack, when the engine is not moving there is no exhaust steam to provide draft for the fire. The blower can be turned on to produce draft when the engine is still or needs a hotter fire such as a slow climb uphill. The smoke box also provided a handy place to hang the feedwater heater, head light, and bell.
