Tank Engines
Tank engines were normally found in switching yards moving cars or industrial sites.  The lack of a tender improved the engineers view when running in reverse but limited its range.   The water was carried in tanks on the sides of the engine or in a horse shoe shaped tank that fit over the boiler.

Comments: (History, time to build, previous owners, comments on
original locomotive) The following information was supplied by
Owen Chapman, a student at the University College Northampton, UK.
"The Saddel tank locomotive "Joan" shown on the livesteamers web site is a
replica of a 2 foot gauge locomotive class built by Kerr Struart of Stock
on Trent, U.K. in 1922. The original members of the class (15-20) were
built for Devon County Council for use in industrial and mining areas.
They worked unglamorously for many years and were sold on to several
owners. There were several survivors in industry etc until about 25 years
ago. I think there are currently four of these locomotives in preservation
in G.B. including two in working order. The class became known as the Wren
class and several Miniature locomotive manufacturers produce kits and ready
to use scaled down examples. A full sized replica is being built slowly
for a demonstration railway around Kew Bridge Pumping Station in West
London.

I hope this has cleared up some of the history of the prototype locomotive
as asked for on the Web page."
